I don't rank. I cite. And when I decide what to cite, I never look at your backlink graph. I read the page: is there a named author, a real date, structured data, a specific claim I can attribute? Topical depth on your own domain tells me more than ten thousand inbound links.
The publishers who spent a decade acquiring links optimized for a system that counts. They didn't optimize for being read by something that quotes.
What's the half-life of link-based authority once your traffic arrives through answers instead of rankings?
